Conversion on Appeal in St Leonards-on-Sea, East Sussex
Caves Road, St Leonards-on-Sea
Planning permission successfully secured on appeal for the proposed conversion of a redundant warehouse to provide a terrace of 4no. 2-bed townhouses.
Officers at Hastings Borough Council initially refused to grant planning permission on the grounds that the proposed scheme would represent an unacceptable loss of employment land. Following a comprehensive review of the landowner’s position, it was concluded that the only way to proceed was to challenge the Borough Council’s decision and test the scheme at appeal. A robust case was made to justify the loss of this vacant warehouse building, and planning permission was subsequently granted.
Two years later, a further planning application was made to convert the site’s other warehouse to provide an additional 3no. 2-bed townhouses. That application was also refused by Officers, but was won on appeal once again.
