Householder Planning Appeal in Lindfield, West Sussex
High Street, Lindfield
Householder planning permission secured on appeal for the erection of a single-storey rear extension to an unlisted residential property in the heart of the Lindfield Conservation Area.
Mid Sussex District Council refused the application, arguing that the extension’s projection beyond the flank wall of the existing house would appear as an unsympathetic addition, harmful to the character and appearance of both the host property and the wider Conservation Area.
The appeal case highlighted that the property forms one half of three pairs of 19th and early 20th century semi-detached houses originally designed as identical dwellings. With the exception of the appeal property, each house had been significantly altered and extended over time. The Planning Inspector gave this context significant weight in the planning balance and allowed the appeal.
